Overwatch 2 Season 13 Brings Nostalgia with Overwatch Classic
- 04-11-2024
Overwatch 2‘s Season 13 has introduced many exciting features, including new 5v5 variants in Quick Play, quality of life changes, and multiple map improvements. However, the standout feature of the season so far is undoubtedly the addition of Overwatch Classic.
Overwatch Classic is Making Waves in the Community
Overwatch Classic‘s debut has generated immense interest among fans of the hero-shooter genre. The original Overwatch, crowned Game of the Year in 2016, left a legacy of nostalgia that this mode aims to revive.
Packed with elements that made the original game a hit, Overwatch Classic introduces a unique aspect not seen in any other mode in Overwatch 2.
What Makes Overwatch Classic Special?
This limited-time event features the original 21 heroes, launch maps, and iconic game modes. One notable highlight is that, unlike Overwatch 2, players can focus on eliminations without dealing with constant healing from support heroes.
Addressing Overwatch 2’s Support Dilemma
The biggest issue with Overwatch 2 lies in its heavy dependency on support characters and their massive healing outputs. This playstyle encourages players to rely on healers rather than improving their positioning and tactics. Playing against such tactics can be frustrating, as healing powers are often overpowered.
In contrast, Overwatch Classic brings back the original five support characters: Mercy, Lucio, Zenyatta, Symmetra, and Ana. These heroes act more like wingmen rather than omnipotent healers. In the original game, every shot counted, and players who misplayed had to retreat or respawn. This self-reliance made the game more engaging and rewarding.
Today’s support players often face burnout from having to top up everyone’s health constantly. Let’s hope Blizzard learns from this event and implements changes to address this issue in Overwatch 2.
Overwatch Classic Sparks a Bigger Conversation
While Overwatch Classic has been well-received, its limited nature has led fans to request its permanent inclusion. However, making it a permanent mode might create challenges for Blizzard.
If Overwatch Classic stays, it could reignite criticism about whether Overwatch 2 was necessary. Originally marketed for its PvE elements (now removed) and single-tank format, the sequel’s relevance might come under scrutiny.
Blizzard’s plans to bring 6v6 playtests in December and January could strike a balance. These playtests will allow players to experience the golden days of double-tank strategies while incorporating the new heroes and reworks introduced in recent years.
