Recent changes within Xbox Game Studios have led to the appointment of a new leader following Alan Hartman's retirement. This transition comes on the heels of significant restructuring within Microsoft's gaming division, which saw Sarah Bond promoted to oversee Xbox while Phil Spencer took charge of the broader gaming strategies at the company. Another major shift was the elevation of Matt Booty to president of game content and studios, with Hartman stepping into the role of Xbox Game Studios manager.

Now, Craig Duncan, the current head of Rare, has been chosen to take on the responsibilities of leading Xbox Game Studios. His selection marks a notable decision, as he is based in Europe and takes the helm at a critical time. Duncan's leadership has been instrumental in the triumph of Rare, particularly with the ongoing popularity of Sea of Thieves, which has substantially performed in the market, including successful engagement during the PlayStation 5's introduction.

Matt Booty expressed his satisfaction with the announcement, highlighting Duncan's extensive background that spans notable companies like Codemasters and Midway Games before joining Xbox in 2011. Under Duncan's direction, Rare has flourished, consistently developing popular intellectual properties, chief among them being Sea of Thieves, which has nurtured a fanbase of over 40 million players.

In this new capacity, Duncan aims to enhance the quality and uniqueness of the gaming experiences offered by the studios, aspiring to cultivate new franchises and expand player reach through innovative IP development.

The leadership transition at Rare also involves Joe Neate and seasoned veteran Jim Horth, with Neate being a well-known figure among long-time fans of Sea of Thieves. Anticipation surrounds the future direction both Rare and Xbox Game Studios will take under this new oversight. With Rare poised to unveil Everwild soon, there is also hope that Duncan's leadership will pave the way for fans' long-cherished desire for Banjo-Kazooie 3, a project that enthusiasts have awaited for years.
